INTERNSHIP PROGRAM


Hershey Theatre is the premier theatre venue for events in Central Pennsylvania, presenting National Touring Companies of Broadway and other touring and local theatrical entertainment. In continuous operation since 1933, the Hershey Theatre has hosted film and theatrical entertainment ever since, which gives it a unique and storied history.

Hershey Theatre is owned by The M.S. Hershey Foundation, a not-for-profit organization founded by Milton Hershey in 1935 and dedicated to providing cultural and educational opportunities for residents of Central Pennsylvania. The M.S. Hershey Foundation also supports Hershey Gardens, Hershey Museum, Hershey Community Archives and Chocolatetown Square.

Hershey Theatre offers two internships: Community Relations Internship with The M.S. Hershey Foundation and Education Department with Hershey Theatre. Both internships are part-time, unpaid, and available during the fall and spring semesters of the school year for college junior and seniors. Hershey Theatre is an operating performance venue and interns will be expected to be available to work nights and weekends.

Interns are accepted into the program after review of submitted materials, discussion with applicant's institution and interviews with staff.

Listed below is a general description of the two internship opportunities that are available at Hershey Theatre.

Community Relations Internship with
The M. S. Hershey Foundation

The M.S. Hershey Foundation exists to preserve and enhance Milton Hershey's legacy and community vision, and to provide educational and cultural enrichment to residents and visitors of Hershey, PA. The Foundation’s operating entities include: Chocolatetown Square, Hershey Community Archives, Hershey Gardens, Hershey Museum, and Hershey Theatre. The Foundation seeks a qualified intern to work with the Community Relations Department on several ongoing projects.

Hours are flexible, but generally scheduled between 9 AM and 3 PM Monday through Friday; there will be occasional weekend days to cover special events. The internship is part-time and unpaid.

The intern will:

  • Interact with team members to learn many aspects of non-profit management
  • Keep a log of daily assignments that were completed, including activities and number of hours worked
  • Participate in interactions with members of Gardens, Theatre and The Hershey Story
  • Be involved in planning meetings for the new museum, The Hershey Story
  • Assist in writing and research of Ovation and The Legacy newsletters
  • Learn the many aspects of planning a special event, from inception and planning to execution and survey
  • Assist in the area of volunteer scheduling, recruitment, training and retention
  • Research background information for new Foundation programs
  • Stay in contact with school representative and follow any requirements that the university/college requires
  • Additional tasks as necessary and time permits

Qualifications:

  • College junior or senior level Bachelor’s degree candidate in Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, Education or related field
  • Interest in the arts/gardens/museum/non-profit organizations
  • Demonstrated desire to work with general public in a positive, engaging way
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Proficient computer skills

Education Department Internship with Hershey Theatre

Hershey Theatre seeks one qualified intern candidate to work with education department staff on ongoing educational outreach projects. A successful candidate will work spring 2009 semester, 20 hours per week, during normal operating hours (M-F 9:00 – 5:00) as well as occasional evenings and weekends. Additional hours may be required during the time frame of April until Mid-May when the concentration of work will be in preparation of the Apollo Awards program to be held Monday, May 18 at the theatre.

Example of duties:

  • Work on collaboration between schools and touring Broadway shows
  • Digital, audio and video work in preparation for live Apollo Awards show
  • Office work to include mailings, phone contacts, computer data input, etc.

Qualifications:

  • College Junior or Senior in Theater, Communications, Mass Media or related field
  • Exceptional computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point
  • Experience working in digital images, presentation software, multimedia and video production a plus
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to work independently
  • Valid driver’s license

Starting and ending dates of the internship are negotiable.
