VOLUNTEER AT HERSHEY THEATRE

Hershey Theatre relies heavily on the help of volunteers. The success of many of our programs depends directly on the efforts of our volunteers. Volunteer work can be a rewarding and enriching experience! Whether providing customer service for guests visiting Hershey Theatre or helping behind the scenes in our offices, volunteers play an important role. Please consider lending us your special skill or simply sharing your time with others! It’s a great way to be a part of central Pennsylvania’s premier performing arts center, and share in the legacy of Milton Hershey.

Who can be a volunteer?

  • Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older (14 and 15-year-olds can work for matinees)
  • Volunteers should be friendly, outgoing, and enjoy working with people
  • Volunteers must be able to stand for at least one hour and must be able to walk up and down stairs (if working at Hershey Theatre shows)
  • Volunteers should have an interest in preserving and promoting Milton Hershey’s legacy
  • Volunteers should have an interest in the performing arts and/or educational programming

What do volunteers do?

Volunteers work primarily in the positions listed below:

  • Ushers serve as the front-line customer service representatives at Hershey Theatre performances. They greet guests, seat them quickly and with courtesy and respect, and respond to any special needs or requirements of the guests.
  • Office Assistants are of general clerical help at Hershey Theatre, helping with mailings, phone campaigns, computer entry, web research, and other duties as assigned. Each department will provide the necessary orientation or training.
  • Tour Guide Assistants occasionally provide help on Spotlight tours and pre-arranged group tours of the Hershey Theatre. Tours are given each Friday, and on Sundays during the summer. Tour guides receive training, and successfully conduct a practice tour, prior to becoming a guide. Previous experience in public speaking or tour guiding is helpful.
  • Educational Programming Assistants help in educational outreaches at Hershey Theatre. They may be asked to greet class groups, provide tours, and monitor classes. Assistants also help as needed with office projects, special events, the Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards, and the Summer Workshops.

How often would I volunteer?

Ushers can either choose to work as a series usher – working the same day for every Broadway Series’ show – or as an individual show usher, usually working about three shows per year. Volunteers must be willing to work at least once in a season in order to be considered an active usher. Other opportunities are on an as-needed basis.

How do I apply?

You may choose one of the following options:

Usher orientation is held in the fall of each year; it is mandatory for each new volunteer usher.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Hershey Theatre!
